We have accepted the Massey Challenge because we want to see a world without cancer.
TEAM DAISY honors my mom, Daisy, who was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia 10 years ago.
We can vividly recall the evening we were delivered the devastating news and the difficult months that followed. I remember living life in a state of crisis for what seemed like an eternity, but once the medical plan fell into place -- thanks to the amazing team at the VCU MASSEY CANCER CENTER -- it became a little easier to cope with anger, fear, pain, grief we felt. Hope began to take the place of all those awful things.
Within 48 hours of her diagnosis, she began chemo/radiation and remained in the hospital. This combination of events went on for several months – she endured a grueling regimen of chemo and lengthy hospital stays. We met with experts, and due to the aggressive nature of her AML, and after careful deliberation, it was decided she’d need to undergo a bone marrow transplant.
Thankfully, a bone marrow match was made (anonymous/unrelated donor), and she began the arduous prep for the transplant – which was ultimately a success. The recovery period has been a journey as well, but life with transplant has brought all of us a tremendous gift.
My mom, Daisy, is fierce – a true cancer warrior, and a survivor. To me she is the epitome of amazing grace and courage.
The odds were stacked against us on this one – but we held on to each other; and we held on to Hope. There were many dark days, but we did our best to see beyond that together. It’s easier said than done, this we know.
We are forever thankful to the amazing team at the VCU Massey Cancer Center and Be The Match for connecting us with her bone marrow donor.
By fundraising for Massey, my 10k will have special meaning and honor those I love who are battling – or have battled cancer.
Will you make a donation towards my fundraising goal or join my team? Let's work together to put cancer on the run!
With Love and Hope
