Running for a Cure

Katie Winn

Katie Winn

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. This cause is near and dear to my heart. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma in 2017. I was treated at VCU Health/Massey and every single person I encountered has been wonderful. I can’t say enough about my doctors and the awesome care I received and continue to receive. It was a scary time and at the same time I was fighting my battle my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She was also treated at VCU Health/Massey and has had exceptional experience as well. I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped us along the way: family, friends and the staff at Massey.

A little about my story: It has been 1 year since my first surgery after my Melanoma diagnosis. 15 staples in my abdomen and they removed 1 lymph node. It was a tough time for my entire family. Little did I know that 2 weeks later when the biopsy results of the lymph node came back I would find out that I was Stage 3 as it had spread. We were all terrified. Stage 3 cancer….just didn’t seem real! But after a second surgery a month later to remove 26 lymph nodes under my right arm I am NED (no evidence of disease). I thank God every day that I am now healthy. I am the most aware of my body I have ever been and well pretty paranoid – which I hope will wear off soon. I have regular CT scans to make sure it doesn’t show up anywhere else as Melanoma is a sneaky disease. Regular skin checks can literally save your life!

If you would like to help support my cause, I am participating in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k to raise funds and awareness for Massey. My 10k will have special meaning as a way to honor those I love who are battling – or have battled cancer like me, my mom and my sister. Will your dollar be the one that cures cancer? I hope you’ll help me put cancer on the run! Thank you!
